Lough Derg Way upgrade works at Laghtea Hill, Portroe, Co. Tipperary
Funding secured by South Tipperary Development Company from Rural Recreation Section of The Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.
Works were carried out through the co-operation of RRO and RSS with M. Gorman Contractor and local landowners Christopher McLoughlin and Diana Whitehead who are walk scheme partisipants on the Lough Derg Way.
Project Description
The works involved the Installation of treated timber steps on two sections of the trail as it decends from the Millenium Cross in Laghtea Hill. Total length of trail upgraded approximately 500m.
This section of the Lough Derg Way is a very steep descent from the Millenium Cross on Laghtea Hill where zig zagging of the trail was not feasible. It was identified in the NTO report as needing attention.
Photographs show the condition of the trail before and after the works were completed
The trail is one of the most popular waymarked ways in Tipperary and is managed through the co-operation of South Tipperary Development Company (John Egan RRO and the landowners), North Tipperary Leader Partnership and Tipperary Co. Co.
This work has proven most successful and really improves the walking experience for hikers and visitors. Further similar works are planned for on nearby Tountinna in the Arra Mountains.
